THE CITY OF WOLFSBURG, GERMANY AND VOLKSWAGEN LAUNCH "WIRELESS WOLFSBURG" USING TROPOS NETWORKS
“Wireless Wolfsburg” to Support Mobile Automotive Internet Applications and Municipal Services
WOLFSBURG, GERMANY – November 10, 2008 -- Tropos® Networks, the market leader in wireless IP broadband mesh networks, today announced that its Tropos MetroMesh™ wireless broadband network infrastructure is being used by “Wireless Wolfsburg,” a jointly funded research cooperative between Volkswagen, Wolfsburg AG, Wobcom GmbH and Decrior GbR.
The purpose of the network is twofold -- the Volkswagen Research Group is using the network to test new vehicle information applications. These include providing vehicle passengers with access to local information about events, cultural attractions and points of interests, weather and traffic conditions. In addition, the network will be used to provide mobile information applications to citizens, business guests and tourists.
“Promoting technologies of the future and making Wolfsburg more attractive are strategic challenges for us. ‘Wireless Wolfsburg’ will help us press ahead with that dual objective,” said Frank Poerschke, from the Wolfsburg AG Board. “We are exploring possible applications for which the City can use and expand the use of the network to benefit the community.”
Wireless Consulting was selected as the system integrator for “Wireless Wolfsburg” where they designed and implemented the network using the Tropos MetroMesh System. "Wireless Wolfsburg" is now one of the largest meshed metro-scale wireless broadband networks in Germany. The network was launched at the end of October in conjunction with the International Suppliers Fair (IZB). A Volkswagen Tiguan which had been outfitted with a wireless connection to the network was unveiled to demonstrate mobile Internet access from vehicles.
The plan is to start up an operating company in 2009 to take over the commercial operation of the wireless network. Besides the applications that already exist, further services are envisaged that will be made available to the citizens of Wolfsburg and visitors. This project demonstrates Wolfsburg’s pioneering role in providing and using the technologies of the future.
“We commend the vision of the City of Wolfsburg and Volkswagen for their innovative use of state-of-the art, wireless broadband technology,” said Bo Nilsson, director of Europe, the Middle East, and Africa for Tropos. “The applications being deployed and tested will not only benefit the community of Wolfsburg but will have a significant impact on the future of the automotive industry. We are honored to have been selected to be a part of the Wireless Wolfsburg cooperative.”
Dr. Klaus Schaaf, from Volkswagen AG's Autouni and the project leader, will present a case study on “Wireless Wolfsburg” next Wednesday, November 12, at Wireless and Digital Cities in Barcelona. He will present the challenges and opportunities in creating a business model for a wireless broadband infrastructure for inner cities, which can be leveraged for diverse uses from automotive research to applications that benefit communities. He will share his experience and insights in to how to test applications – from automotive to business, over a Tropos wireless broadband network.
