SAN MATEO, CA - April 20, 2004
-- Tropos Networks, a leading supplier of equipment used to build
metro-scale Wi-Fi networks, today announced that the City of
New Orleans, Louisiana, has selected the company as its supplier
for metro-scale Wi-Fi equipment for use in the city’s
surveillance camera project. New Orleans will use Tropos equipment
to build a city-wide wireless video surveillance network. |
|
 |
| |
The surveillance system will use the Neighborhood
WatchCam, developed by Active Video Solutions of New Orleans,
Louisiana. It will be deployed by Southern Electronics, of New
Orleans, Louisiana, with Verge Wireless Networks, Inc., of New
Orleans, Louisiana, serving as the integrator and installer
for this unprecedented wireless network system. |
|
 |
| |
“The video surveillance capabilities
enabled by the Tropos metro-scale Wi-Fi network help make citizens
throughout New Orleans safer,” said C. Ray Nagin, Mayor
of New Orleans. “Quickly giving our police department,
in effect, extra eyes to patrol our city will deter crime and
help apprehend perpetrators when incidents do occur.”
|
|
 |
| |
The Tropos metro-scale Wi-Fi network will
operate in areas where video surveillance cameras are deployed.
It will quickly and economically supply network connectivity
to video cameras in locations where there is no access to the
city’s wired network. It can also provide broadband wireless
data connections for police officers, allowing them to view
surveillance camera video while in the field. |
|
 |
| |
“New Orleans is at the forefront of
cities that will combine metro-scale Wi-Fi networks with video
surveillance technology to make their streets safer,”
said Ron Sege, President and CEO of Tropos Networks. “Adding
video to the broadband mobility provided by the Tropos system
quickly and cost-effectively takes the benefits of wireless
networking in public safety to a new level. Network-enabled
video surveillance will allow faster dispatch of officers to
incident sites, permit officers to assess the situation at an
incident scene prior to arrival and help apprehend suspects
by providing clear images of them to officers in the field.” |
|
 |
| |
The New Orleans network will employ Tropos
5110 Wi-Fi cells, an outdoor-optimized and ruggedized node based
on the 802.11 standard, on a city-wide basis. The Tropos 5110
quickly and economically uses the intelligent Tropos Predictive
Wireless Routing Protocol (PWRP) to provide pervasive coverage
over metro areas. The Tropos PWRP routes traffic wirelessly,
eliminating up to 95% of the wired backhaul associated with
traditional access point solutions. Tropos Wi-Fi cells form
a wireless mesh, dynamically routing traffic along the highest
throughput path to a wired gateway. This intelligent routing
negates effects of radio frequency (RF) interference, wired
backhaul failure and node failure. PWRP also scales to thousands
of nodes with the lowest routing overhead in the industry. |
|
 |
| |
“Based on our other metro-scale Wi-Fi
installations, we know that a Tropos system can be deployed
over a multi-square-mile scale in a matter of days,” said
Carlo McDonald, president of Verge Wireless. “Because
Tropos equipment is based on the 802.11 standard, there is no
need to install expensive, hard-to-maintain, proprietary client
hardware and software in the surveillance cameras or the in-field
computers used to monitor them. The resulting network provides
an outdoor mobile broadband experience that is indistinguishable
from indoor wireless and wired experiences.” |
