NANTUCKET, MASS., August 5, 2004
Tropos Networks, the leading supplier of equipment used to build
metro-scale Wi-Fi networks, today announced that WiBLAST Communications
has selected Tropos equipment to build a Wi-Fi network that
will provide residents, businesses and vacationers with a mix
of both fixed and mobile broadband services in downtown Nantucket
and the community of Naushop while preserving the environmental
integrity of the scenic island. |
|
 |
| |
To kick-off and demonstrate this capability,
WiBlast and Tropos Networks will co-sponsor the Ozone Surf Classic
event on Sunday, August 8th beginning at 8:00 a.m. and will
also cover Cisco Beach using Tropos Wi-Fi cells so that beachgoers
will be able to surf the waves and now, for the first time,
the Internet for free. The Ozone Surf Classic is a Nantucket
community surfing competition sponsored by Nantucket Nectars
and The Chicken Box to benefit local charities and celebrates
the life and memory of islander and surfer David Ozias. |

“We chose Tropos Networks’ wireless
solutions because we wanted to make sure we could provide the
best broadband services to Nantucket and ensure that we would
be able to preserve the natural beauty of the island without
disrupting the environment with unsightly wires or cables and
equipment. We feel confident that we can achieve these goals
because Tropos is the leader in metro-scale, Wi-Fi mesh networking
with a proven track record and customers. Their Wi-Fi cell system
makes it fast, easy and economically feasible to build and operate
a large-scale, Wi-Fi network on the island,” said John
Havill, president of WiBLAST. “Using their proven wireless
mesh networking equipment, the businesses, residents and vacationers
in downtown Nantucket and the residents of Naushop will have
high performance broadband services and at a very affordable
level, compared to existing alternatives.”

“We are pleased at the selection and
are excited that the historic and beautiful island of Nantucket
will now be unwired with Tropos, thanks to WiBLAST,” said
Ron Sege, president and CEO of Tropos. “WiBLAST’s
selection of Tropos is further validation of our superior Wi-Fi
cell mesh networking equipment and builds on the tremendous
market momentum and diversity of applications for our wireless
networking system and Wi-Fi in general.” |

| |
Completion of the Naushop deployment is planned
for September and of the Nantucket network in early Fall. |

The Nantucket network will use Tropos 5110
Wi-Fi cells, an outdoor-optimized and ruggedized wireless mesh
router based on the 802.11 standard. The Tropos 5110 installs
quickly and economically, using the intelligent Tropos Predictive
Wireless Routing Protocol (PWRP) to provide pervasive coverage
over metro-scale areas. The Tropos PWRP routes traffic wirelessly,
eliminating up to 95% of the wired backhaul associated with
traditional access point solutions. Tropos Wi-Fi cells form
a wireless mesh, dynamically routing traffic along the highest
throughput path to a wired gateway. This intelligent routing
negates effects of radio frequency (RF) interference, wired
backhaul failure and node failure. PWRP also scales to thousands
of nodes with the lowest routing overhead in the industry. Network
support costs are minimized via the central management capabilities
of the Tropos Control Element Manager, a configuration, monitoring
and maintenance tool. |

| |
Tropos Wi-Fi mesh networking customers include
recently announced live commercial deployments in Chaska, MN.;
Baton Rouge, Lafayette and New Orleans, LA; Cerritos, Milpitas,
San Mateo and Half Moon Bay, CA; the National Mall in Washington,
D.C. as well as successful trials and initial deployments underway
with Corpus Christie, TX, Milpitas, CA and NASA. Tropos Wi-Fi
mesh networking systems are used for a variety of public Internet
access and mission critical applications including public safety;
database access; residential, business and mobile user internet
access; video surveillance and automated meter reading, to name
a few. |
