Team Scores First Successes in Shirakawa Village and with Location-Aware Application in Flower Festival Commemorative Park

  SUNNYVALE, CA, March 9, 2005
Tropos Networks, the leading supplier of equipment used to build metro-scale Wi-Fi mesh networks, today announced that its family of MetroMesh routers and management software is now available in Japan through Sumitomo Densetsu. Tropos and Sumitomo Densetsu, working with VR Techno Center, scored their first successes in Shirakawa Village and Flower Festival Commemorative Park, both located in Gifu Prefecture, Japan.

"Sumitomo Densetsu always looks for innovative solutions to serve our carrier and municipal customers," said Mr.Koji Nemoto, Department Manager of Sumitomo Densetsu Network System Division. "Tropos MetroMesh meets the needs of our demanding customers by providing proven metro-scale Wi-Fi mesh networking solutions that are fast, reliable, low-cost and easy to deploy and operate."
"We are delighted to partner with Sumitomo Densetsu for metro-scale Wi-Fi mesh networking in Japan, and are very pleased with the successful trial in Shirakawa Village and the win at Flower Festival Commemorative Park," said Mr. Ron Sege, President and CEO of Tropos. "Sumitomo Densetsu will be a great asset to Tropos in Japan because of their strong expertise in installing mobile communication infrastructures for carriers and municipalities markets."
Tropos and Sumitomo Densetsu recently scored their first success as a team in Shirakawa Village, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, located in Gifu Prefecture, Japan. Sumitomo Densetsu developed an outdoor Wi-Fi solution for Gifu Prefecture, evaluating a number of outdoor Wi-Fi solutions before selecting Tropos. During the successful trial, the network provided broadband Internet access to villagers, who previously were limited to lower speed ISDN connections. Other applications, including IP cameras and VoIP, were also run on the network.
Based on the success in Shirakawa, Sumitomo Densetsu, working with VR Techno Center, implemented a production network for Gifu Prefecture in Flower Festival Commemorative Park located in Kani City. The Flower Festival Commemorative Park implementation is unique in that it is used to provide park visitors with information about the park's horticultural richness. As visitors with specially-equipped PDAs walk close to an RFID-embedded flower or tree, the PDA uses the Tropos MetroMesh network to retrieve information about that flower or tree from the park's database and displays the information on the PDA's screen.
Tropos Networks and Sumitomo Densetsu worked with VR Techno Center, a joint venture between Gifu Prefecture and a number of Japanese private-sector companies, in planning and installing the Shirakawa Village and Flower Festival Commemorative Park networks.
Sumitomo Densetsu anticipates deploying Wi-Fi mesh networks in other mountainous areas in Japan that currently lack broadband Internet access.
