GOMOORHEAD! TO PROVIDE AFFORDABLE INTERNET ACCESS WITH TROPOS NETWORKS’ METROMESH

Residents to Get $19.95 Wireless Internet Access

MOORHEAD, MINN. – April 6, 2005 – Tropos Networks, the proven leader in delivering truly ubiquitous, metro-scale, Wi-Fi mesh network systems, today announced that GoMoorhead!, a wireless Internet service provider (WISP) owned and operated by Moorhead Public Service (MPS) of Moorhead, Minnesota, will provide its residents and businesses with affordable, fast and reliable wireless Internet access services. Frustrated by the high cost of existing cable and DSL services and the low speed of dial-up services, MPS decided, in conjunction with the city and the community, to provide the service as an alternative. GoMoorhead! is using Tropos Networks’ MetroMesh system to deploy its own metro-scale Wi-Fi mesh network covering the entire 13 square miles of the community. MPS will install and test the network in June and plans to go live in July.

“Over the years and most recently in the past several months we’ve had a dialogue with the community about the need for affordable and high quality broadband services in Moorhead,” said Bill Schwandt, general manager of Moorhead Public Service and GoMoorhead! “Finally, with the advent of the wireless Internet and the MetroMesh system from Tropos Networks, we are able to deliver what the community has been asking for.”

“I don’t think the community can afford NOT to do this,” said Bob Swenson, Moorhead Public Service Commissioner. “The price point is right on for residential and business customers looking for reliable and affordable Internet service.”

The City of Moorhead, with 33,000 people, is the largest Minnesota community west of the Twin Cities. MPS estimates that about 5,000 its households will sign up for the service along with some 600 or so smaller businesses that don’t need or can’t afford T-1 services. Residents will pay $19.95 a month for the service with the option of leasing ($5/month) or purchasing ($150) the wireless bridge or access box. Small businesses can subscribe for GoMoorhead! Internet service for just $24.95 a month.

“I’ve been waiting for affordable broadband access here in Moorhead and can’t wait to utilize the network as soon as it’s operational. “said Brad Grosz, 45-year resident of Moorhead. “Residents and small businesses alike are tired of slow dial-up service and have been looking for an alternative to the expensive cable and DSL service that is available today”.

“We are implementing Tropos Networks because their mesh equipment is technologically advanced and reliable. Plus, Tropos has emerged as a leader in city-wide deployment of municipal Wi-Fi networks,” said Schwandt.

“We are pleased that the Tropos MetroMesh system is allowing MPS to realize its desire to help the community and provide high speed, reliable Internet access at an affordable price,” said Ron Sege, president and CEO of Tropos Networks. “Our mission has always been to make it fast, simple and economical to deploy our systems, knowing that communities around the world have the same need.”

While planning the MetroMesh network, GoMoorhead! worked closely with Twin Cities based First Mile Wireless, a leading reseller and integrator of wireless network solutions. First Mile Wireless provided design, consultation, RF engineering, and support services to GoMoorhead!. First Mile Wireless has extensive experience in designing and installing MetroMesh network, having previously worked on the MetroMesh installation for chaska.net in Chaska, MN, among others.

Moorhead will deploy outdoor-optimized Tropos MetroMesh routers. Tropos MetroMesh routers quickly and economically use the intelligent Tropos Predictive Wireless Routing Protocol (PWRP™) to provide pervasive coverage over metro areas. PWRP forms a wireless mesh, dynamically routing traffic along the highest throughput path to a wired gateway. This intelligent routing negates effects of radio frequency (RF) interference, wired backhaul failure and mesh router failure. PWRP scales to thousands of nodes with the lowest routing overhead in the industry. Network support costs are minimized via the central management capabilities of the Tropos Control element manager, a configuration, monitoring and maintenance tool.
