More than 60 partners in 22 countries work with Tropos to spur economic development, provide low-cost broadband Internet access, improve public safety and more.
SUNNYVALE, CA, July 7, 2005 – Tropos Networks Inc., the leading supplier of equipment used to build metro-scale Wi-Fi mesh networks, today announced it added 75 customers in the first half of 2005, and closed its 200th customer with the signing of Tulsa MetroNet of Tulsa, Oklahoma. The record 75 new customers in a six-month period puts Tropos on pace to, over the course of 2005, far outstrip the 90 customers added in 2004, and the 35 in 2003 and earlier. Based on current RFP activity and sales engagements, Tropos forecasts that more than an additional 220 municipalities will install metro-scale Wi-Fi networks during the next 12 months in the U.S. alone.
“The Tulsa MetroNet installation shows again that metro-scale Wi-Fi mesh networks are proving themselves in an increasingly broad range of applications, for a larger group of customers and in larger geographic footprints. Our MetroMesh™ networks have evolved from supporting mobile public safety applications to providing low cost residential Internet access to enabling new applications such as municipal automation and low-cost calling via voice-over-Wi-Fi,” said Ron Sege, President and CEO of Tropos Networks. “Seventy-five customer wins in the first six months of 2005, and 200 customers in total, proves that metro-scale Wi-Fi meets unmet worldwide demand for fast, low-cost and simple broadband access for a wide range of applications and settings.”
In addition to Tulsa, in the first half of 2005, Laguna Beach, CA; Newport Harbor, CA; Pensacola, FL; St. Petersburg, FL; South Bend, IN; Moorhead, MN; Jamestown, NY; Addison, TX; Granbury, TX; Alexandria, VA; Lynchburg, VA; Algiers, Algeria; Conception, Chile; Iwakuni, Japan; and Cebu, Philippines, among other, joined previously installed cities such as Los Angeles, CA; New Orleans, LA; Chaska, MN; Las Vegas, NV; Oklahoma City, OK; Philadelphia, PA; Corpus Christi, TX; Tokyo, Japan and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in enjoying the benefits of MetroMesh networks.
Tulsa MetroNet is using Tropos MetroMesh routers to provide high-speed residential and business wireless Internet access. The network will cover 72 square miles in the Tulsa metro region. Access to the network will be available for as little as $24.95 per month.
“We chose Tropos MetroMesh routers for our network because they provide the high throughput, excellent economics and ease of deployment that we require to cover the Tulsa metro area,” said Trevor Langham, CEO of Tulsa MetroNet. “Tropos Networks’ installed base of 200 customers gives us confidence that the proven market leader is on our team.”
The first half of 2005 also saw Tropos Networks achieve significant milestones beyond customer acquisition. The company introduced the MetroMesh architecture, Release 4 of the MetroMesh OS and Tropos Control and the Tropos 5210 outdoor MetroMesh router. Tropos products are now certified for sale in more than 32 countries.
In addition, Tropos forged significant partnerships with market leaders such as Wireless Facilities, Inc., NEC Solutions America, Sumitomo Densetsu, Nissho Electronics and NetMotion Wireless, among others. It was recognized by Fierce Wireless as a member of their Fierce 15 and received the MobileTrax Mobility Award for the Tropos 5110 MetroMesh router.
The first half of 2005 also saw an increase in Tropos Networks’ public policy activities. Tropos executives testified in favor of broadband choice to committees of the Texas State House, the Colorado State Senate, and the New York City Council. This effort culminated in Tropos Networks joining a coalition of more than 40 groups representing local governments, the high-tech industry and consumer organizations to support the “Community Broadband Act of 2005,” recently introduced by Senators John McCain and Frank Lautenberg.
“The first half of the year exceeded our high expectations and we look forward to accelerating success as we move through the rest of 2005,” Sege added. “The recent highlighting of the myriad benefits of metro-scale Wi-Fi in the international press, along with our customer and partner results, demonstrates that our fast, low-cost and simple to deploy and operate MetroMesh system is propelling this dynamic market.”
