YOZAN PARTNERS WITH TROPOS NETWORKS TO DELIVER COMBINATION WIMAX/WI-FI MESH DEPLOYMENT IN TOKYO

Partnership marks first metropolitan deployment of important wireless broadband standards, solution featured at Wireless Japan Expo

TOKYO, July 19, 2006 - YOZAN Inc., a leading telecommunications operator providing services throughout the Tokyo metropolitan area, today announced a partnership with Tropos Networks, the market leader for metro-scale Wi-Fi mesh solutions, to create a mixed WiMAX/MetroMesh trial network in metropolitan Tokyo. The deployment will be the first harmonious deployment of WiMAX and Wi-Fi mesh in Japan. The two companies will be presenting the partnership solution at Wireless Japan Expo, July 19th through 21st, in Tokyo. Interested parties can visit the companies at Wireless Japan 2006 (http://www.secretariat.ne.jp/wj2006/, 7/19-21, Tokyo Big Sight East Hall #2) for more information.

The deployment will represent a significant milestone in wireless broadband deployments, with fixed 802.16 (WiMAX) technology used to deliver high-speed backhaul connections to an 802.11 (Wi-Fi) mesh network. The combined WiMAX and Wi-Fi mesh network will provide users mobile wireless broadband connectivity throughout the coverage areas. The network leverages the existing YOZAN WiMAX infrastructure in Tokyo, and adds the Tropos MetroMesh architecture for pervasive, reliable and mobile Wi-Fi connectivity. Tropos MetroMesh routers will be installed across a portion of the tens of thousands of mounting locations to which YOZAN has rights, previously used for PHS cells.

"The technology and market leadership that Tropos has in the Wi-Fi mesh space makes them an important partner for the future of our network," says Leonard H. Mochizuki, V.P. Strategic Relations at YOZAN. "The scalability and reliability of the MetroMesh system allows us to add an element of mobility, without any client-side modifications, to our portfolio of broadband services."

"Telecommunications pioneers, such as YOZAN, understand the complementary nature of these two technologies," said Chris Rittler, VP of Business Development and Product Management for Tropos Networks. "Open standards foster innovation, and the convergence of fixed WiMAX and metro-scale Wi-Fi creates an attractive broadband delivery infrastructure, both technologically and economically."

The Tropos MetroMesh architecture, deployed in more than 300 deployments in 30 countries worldwide, delivers reliable and high-capacity Wi-Fi over very large metropolitan areas. Subscribers with standard 802.11 b/g client devices can connect to the network securely from any location within the coverage area. The MetroMesh operation and optimization tools, Tropos Control and Tropos Insight, allow service providers to deliver the best user experience at the lowest cost in the industry. In addition, these tools allow proactive monitoring of network performance at all layers, enabling optimization in a dynamic environment at all times, and ensuring the highest level of subscriber satisfaction possible.

Yozan will trial Tropos MetroMesh architecture in Tokyo to provide integration of both Wi-Fi and WiMAX networks, and preparation for the trial will start on July 19th.

About YOZAN, Inc.
Yozan is a telecom service operator in Tokyo, Japan, offering WiMAX-based wireless broadband and multicasting services. In December 2005 Yozan became the first operator in Japan to launch WiMAX services, amidst a growing trend in the telecom sector of leading companies advancing WiMAX initiatives.

The company currently provides 2 types of WiMAX services - WiMAX Direct for corporate users demanding high-quality broadband services; and BitStand for individual subscribers. The company is continuing its aggressive network deployment to provide comprehensive service area coverage throughout the 23 wards of Tokyo - with the goal to become the nation's largest wireless broadband service operator. In addition, Yozan offers Child Safety Monitoring services over the Vodafone network (specifically to local municipal government-clients) and AirBit Key services utilizing Yozan's own paging network. Future plans include service offerings based on an integration of PLC (Power Line Communications) and WiMAX, upon deregulation of rules scheduled in the third quarter of 2006; and 802.16e mobile WiMAX-based services scheduled for 2007. The company is focused on expanding its coverage area to contribute to a ubiquitous telecommunications environment.
