TROPOS UNVEILS METROMESH OS 6, INCLUDING NEW MESH EDGE SERVICE MANAGEMENT, FOR LARGE-SCALE CARRIER NETWORKS

Granular Control at Network Edge Creates New Revenue Generating Opportunities While BGP Routing Delivers Large-Scale Mobility

SUNNYVALE, CA, March 8, 2007 - TroposŪ Networks, the market leader of metro-scale wireless mesh network systems, today announced MetroMesh OS 6 featuring the new Mesh Edge Service Management (MESMT), BGP routing and pre-configured operating templates. MESM provides network operators with the means to exercise control, detect threats and enforce policies at the very edge of the mesh network. As a result, carriers can efficiently manage their wireless mesh networks and can create new revenue generating services.

"As metro-scale networks evolve from single, small city networks to carrier networks with a footprint of many large cities, intelligent software services are required at the mesh edge to enable operators to successfully deploy and run their networks," said Saar Gillai, Vice President of Engineering and Product Management at Tropos. "The sophisticated network analytics delivered by our recently-announced Tropos Insight 2.0 provide operators with visibility to the edge of metro-scale mesh networks. Now, with the new Mesh Edge Service Management capabilities of MetroMesh OS 6, operators can use this visibility to exercise control, detect threats and enforce policies at the network's edge."

With these control and threat detection capabilities, MESM enables carriers to offer a consistent, high quality user experience. It creates new revenue opportunities by enabling differentiated services including tiered pricing. Managing traffic at the very edge of the network also saves valuable airtime, increasing the usable capacity of the entire network.

For example, MESM can manage airtime use at the network edge, ensuring that all subscribers have a fair level of access to network resources. It can also preserve available network capacity by isolating egregious or virus-stricken users and blacklisting them. MESM supports peer-to-peer blocking for traffic regulation and rate limiting to ensure fair subscriber use of network capacity. Conversely, it can enable specific traffic types (e.g., peer-to-peer), to provide more airtime and allow higher bandwidth limits for premium subscribers.

MESM also enables metro-scale threat detection with configurable Denial of Service deterrence and evil twin detection.

MESM, as an integral component of the MetroMesh OS, is embedded in every Tropos MetroMesh router. By running on each router, MESM can control all links in the network, including those between the mesh and attached client, ensuring effective management of all network resources, including client access airtime, and eliminating costly overhead. By placing control at the network edge, traffic does not need to travel over valuable wireless links to an expensive, failure-prone, centralized controller only to be dropped as a result of operator policy.

BGP Routing for Large-Scale Mobility
MetroMesh OS 6 also includes new BGP routing support to enable fast, scalable roaming in metro-scale wireless networks operated by carriers with national footprints. MetroMesh OS 6's unique use of BGP provides mobility awareness to the carrier's core router network. BGP efficiently preserves valuable wireless capacity as mobile users move across subnets throughout the network.

Pre-Configured Network Operation Templates
MetroMesh OS 6 includes pre-configured network operation templates to simplify network deployment and configuration. The templates automatically optimize many complex network-wide configuration parameters based on a number of factors, including network size, deployment density, number of network users, types of clients and anticipated network usage. The templates serve as a "Tropos expert in-a-box," applying experience garnered in more than 500 metro-scale network deployments to automate provisioning and eliminate laborious, error-prone manual configuration.

Availability and Pricing
MetroMesh OS 6 is available now. For existing Tropos customers with a valid support subscription, there is no additional charge to update to MetroMesh OS 6.
