LAFAYETTE UTILITIES SYSTEM SELECTS TROPOS AND CSG DATA NETWORKS FOR ITS WIRELESS BROADBAND NETWORK
Customer Owned and Operated Utility Set to Own and Operate Network That Will Increase Efficiencies of Mobile Utility Workers
SUNNYVALE, CA, May 9, 2007 - Tropos Networks, market leader in metro-scale wireless mesh networks, and CSG Data Networks, a leader in network design and implementation of large scale wireless deployments, today announced that their solution has been selected by the Lafayette Utilities System (LUS) for the city of Lafayette, Louisiana. The Lafayette Utilities System or LUS is deploying the system to enable mobile utility workers to operate more efficiently, reduce cost and improve customer experience for citywide services such as electric, water, wastewater, telecommunications and other wholesale services.
The city-owned and operated network will be deployed in multiple phases and will encompass the city's entire 49 square miles. Initial use will enable utility workers who are working in the field to both send and receive documents. This includes critical documents such as work orders, building schematics, city maps and Geographic Information System (GIS) models that provide layouts of power and water routing, manholes, light poles and electric meters.
"The citywide Wi-Fi mesh network is a strategic decision for our city as it will enable us to move towards our goal of further enhancing city municipal services and improving the efficiency of our mobile workers," said Terry Huval, LUS director. "We foresee adding new applications that will be supported by the metro-scale mesh network such as video surveillance of utility sites for public safety, automated meter reading to reduce errors, even communications with utility-owned vehicles to improve customer response time."
"We selected Tropos' MetroMesh solution and CSG Data Networks because of their high quality products that utilize proven technology," said Mona Simon, LUS communications engineer. "We know that together these solutions will work well with our existing fiber infrastructure and it will be cost-effective to deploy, operate and expand."
LUS will be responsible for the installation of the equipment and deployment of the network, while partnering with CSG to provide equipment and software. Once the system is operational, LUS will operate and maintain the network, as it currently does with its existing fiber ring for wholesale telecommunications services.
