LAST MILE SELECTS TUCSON, AZ AS SMART COMMUNITY AWARD WINNER AT DIGITAL CITY EXPO 2008
City Wins for Innovation and Leadership in its Deployment of a Tropos Wireless Broadband Network to Enable Telemedicine and Intelligent Transportation System
PHOENIX, AZ - January 24, 2008 -- Last Mile Magazine today announced that the City of Tucson, Arizona is one of two winners of the 2008 Smart Community Awards at the Digital City EXPO in Phoenix. Tucson was honored at a reception during the annual municipal broadband conference on Wednesday, Jan. 23 for its innovative use of TroposŪ Networks' metro-scale wireless mesh IP wireless network for two high-value applications today that benefit the community.
The Smart Community Awards honor municipalities that show proactive leadership and innovation in deploying a broadband network. Two awards are given annually, one to a city with a population of more than 200,000 and one to a city with a population less than 200,000. Tucson won for the former category and was honored for its Tropos Networks' wireless broadband network, a 230-square mile system that enables two significant applications today; the city is evaluating additional services today that can leverage this same infrastructure. One of the first applications deployed on the network is a mobile video-based Emergency Medical Services (EMS) telemedicine system called ER-Link. ER-Link is based on General Devices' leading E-BRIDGE mobile telemedicine
application, installed in EMS vehicles and at the hospital . The network allows doctors at the city's University Medical Center access to real-time video and vital sign information on patients en route via EMS, saving lives and enabling the hospital to have the appropriate trauma team prepared when the patient arrives.
In addition, Tucson uses the network to analyze traffic, data and images by tracking signal patterns, pedestrians and vehicle density to better optimize traffic signal settings for traffic flow. By owning the network infrastructure, Tucson is saving approximately $200,000 annually in telecommunication fees. The network was designed and installed by SmartWAVE Technologies LLC, a leading wireless-centric systems integrator.
"With the Tropos Wi-Fi network, the city of Tucson has implemented an IP highway that not only vastly improves municipal services, but will save lives," said Tom Ayers, Tropos Networks' President and CEO. "What Tucson has accomplished is a testament to how citywide Wi-Fi uniquely enables new and powerful applications that improve municipal services within a community as well as the efficiency of mobile city workers."
"Tucson has shown how broadband networks can be implemented by large municipalities to the benefit of its citizens," says Rob Krzys, associate publisher of Last Mile. "This network shows why an IP communications network is vital to a community."
The Smart Community Awards were chosen by the Last Mile editorial staff and approved by the magazine's editorial advisory staff and a panel of broadband industry experts. The nominees are judged based on deploying ubiquitous broadband access, improving economic development, enabling public safety, benefiting education and fostering public participation. Nominations are gathered each year through the magazine's Web site, http://www.lastmileonline.com
