SUNNYVALE, CALIF. -- February 2, 2012 – Tropos Networks® today announced that it has been voted to the list of “12 Smart Grid Companies to Watch in 2012” by the readers of Smart Grid News. Over 7,000 votes were cast during the week-long voting period. Tropos was selected to a short list of 26 companies by the editorial staff of Smart Grid News and then voted by readers to the final list of 12. Tropos achieved this honor in 2011 as well.

Tropos provides reliable and flexible wireless communications networks for utilities to build and control the smart grid. To help utilities vastly improve smart grid communications security, Tropos  recently announced the release of its Mesh OS 7.7 that brings enterprise class security to utility’s field area networks and is the first IPsec-based, NERC CIP compliant solution for extending secure wireless communications all the way through substations to distribution automation endpoints. In addition, Tropos just announced its Tropos® 1410 wireless mesh router and wireless bridge for field automation applications. The new product line extends advanced enterprise-class security to utility and industrial applications that monitor and control field automation devices.

“The Smart Grid News 'Companies to Watch' awards are unique in two ways,” said Jesse Berst, Managing Director, Global Smart Energy, publishers of SmartGridNews.com “First, they are chosen by the readership at large, which is comprised 75% of utility professionals and the balance of electric power consultants, suppliers, regulators and policymakers. Second, they are not about the past but about the future -- about which companies are expected to have interesting new developments this year. As such, they provide an intriguing sneak preview of the smart grid's future and the companies likely to take us there.”

“We are pleased to be chosen once again by Smart Grid News readers as a Smart Grid Company to Watch,” said Tom Ayers, President and CEO of Tropos Networks. “Tropos is at the forefront of secure grid communications, taking steps to bring both military and enterprise-level security measures to our standard technology.  As smart grid deployments continue, a secure and reliable communications infrastructure will be the make or break component.”

In 2012, Tropos will continue its wireless smart grid network communications momentum with new customers and ongoing projects at investor-owned utilities (IOUs) and municipally owned utilities (MOUs) such as DTE Energy, Avista, Fort Collins Utilities and Idaho Falls Power.
