Pittsburgh ’s Allegheny County Housing Authority Deploys Tropos Wireless Broadband Network to Enhance Community Services
Network Access Facilitates Communications for Jobs Program and Police
SUNNYVALE, CA -- March 16, 2010 – Tropos Networks, the leading provider of IP broadband mesh networks used by cities and utilities, is pleased to announce the successful deployment of its network throughout the low income Pleasant Ridge housing community in Allegheny, PA. The network is a key element of the Allegheny Housing Authority’s (ACHA) job development program and enables anyone in the coverage area to have free access to a job search portal. The job program also provided 68 laptops to residents, along with training on their use and fundamentals in accessing the wireless network. The goal is to provide residents seeking work with greater visibility into local job opportunities.
Over the same network, WiFi Pittsburgh offers a fee-based Internet access service for residents, businesses, and visitors, providing an alternative to other Internet services. In addition, ACHA police officers are using the network to improve operational efficiencies. The officers use the network to quickly access data from the field rather than returning to the precinct for viewing police records and other online databases. IP video cameras are connected to the network and are monitored centrally helping expand police visibility into problems quickly while improving community safety. Officers in the field are able to access the video feeds from their vehicles over the network enabling them to be better prepared when they arrive at a location.
“We are excited to have the Tropos communications network at Pleasant Ridge,” said Frank Aggazio, executive director for Allegheny Housing Authority. “With this network, we can improve the quality of life for residents by providing them with greater access to job opportunities and increasing public safety.”
The Tropos outdoor mesh network was designed and deployed and is being operated by aspStation, Inc. aspStation will also provide network operation services for the Allegheny County Housing Authority. Stephen Zelenko, eExecutive vice president of aspStation said, “We are excited to help the county provide Internet access to the community for a job development program and enable the police to monitor the neighborhood with wireless IP cameras from their cruisers.”
“We congratulate the Allegheny County Housing Authority’s vision to provide the community with a broadband communications foundation that will improve the quality of life,” said Mike Bailey, vice president engineering and operations for Tropos Networks. “This is a great example of the value broadband can provide in building greener, safer smarter communities.”
