Dear Tropos Follower,

Much as happened in our company and our industry since our last newsletter. Our large-scale production deployments continue to mount, which has allowed us to create a simple planning brief to help ensure a quick, effective metro-scale installation. Large cities like Philadelphia have started to deploy our solutions to capture economic, social and public safety benefits, which has caught the attention of the large, incumbent carriers. WiMAX is closer to becoming a reality in the market and, in response to our customer’s requests, Tropos has published a road map for integration of this valuable and complimentary wireless standard. The breadth of applications supported by Tropos products continues to increase, with the effectiveness of Wi-Fi video surveillance demonstrated in New Orleans and the FCC voting to allow the use of Wi-Fi-derived technologies in 4.9Ghz public safety applications. Last but certainly not least, the Chaska.net Tropos network continues to exceed customer expectations in terms of performance, popularity and economics, which is an exciting development indeed.

Thank you for you continued interest in, and support of Tropos and of metro scale wireless broadband. We can’t do it without you!

Red Herring Selects Tropos Networks For Prestigious Red Herring Top 100 Innovators Award

"Selection for the Innovation 100 puts a company in an elite group. The editors worked hard to identify the companies who will benefit from the important technology trends in the coming year.", said Joel Dreyfuss, Editor-in-Chief of Red Herring.

Red Herring’s editorial staff evaluated over 1200 submissions from 900 companies. The editors used a careful analysis of financial data as well as subjective criteria, including quality of management, execution of strategy, and dedication to research and development.

The Philadelphia Story

The City of Philadelphia, PA, has been dominating headlines around the world since their announcement of a citywide Wi-Fi initiative. The city sees a plethora of social and economic benefits in deploying fast, low-cost and simple metro-scale Wi-Fi and making broadband available to users anywhere in the city. Ours is truly impactful technology that we believe is truly complementary to existing carrier offerings because it significantly extends the reach of existing wireline deployments and because it adds the important element of nomadicity. The latter benefits many constituencies, from low-income families wanting to connect in community centers to first-responders needed access to broadband applications on-scene. Like any impactful new technology, it may make some incumbent service providers uneasy as they come up to speed on the nature and applications of the technology. The Wall Street Journal recently published an interesting article on the subject, and National Public Radio (NPR) produced an in depth report. Municipalities across the country are watching the issue closely.

Wi-Fi, WiMAX…Why Bother?

The wireless industry has been abuzz about the explosion of Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11) technology both in the enterprise and more recently in the metro area. At the same time, the market has begun to develop great expectations about the promise of WiMAX (IEEE 802.16) technologies. Tropos believes that both are complementary, with Wi-Fi having the advantage of immediate availability and shipment volumes, and WiMAX promising to reduce cost and improve flexibility of wireless backhaul products and in licensed applications. Tropos Networks has announced a comprehensive plan to integrate WiMAX technology into metro-scale mesh deployments, and has joined the WiMAX forum as a principal member. Additionally, we have produced an informative whitepaper on these two very complimentary technologies.

Saving Lives in New Orleans

Recently, the City of New Orleans began widespread deployment of Tropos metro-scale Wi-Fi for public safety and video monitoring applications. Initially deployed throughout the city’s most dangerous quarters, the wireless video network has already proven to be instrumental in saving lives and reducing crime. According to Chris Drake, Project Director for the Mayor’s Office of Technology in New Orleans, murders are down an astounding 57% and auto thefts are down 30%. Read the article here.

FCC Rules on 4.9Ghz Public Safety Spectrum

In their October meeting, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) addressed the need for low-cost licensed spectrum for public safety use. The ruling effectively enables vendors to take advantage of low-cost standards-based radio equipment in providing infrastructure for dedicated public safety use. Chaska.net Demonstrates Economic Benefits of Metro-Scale Wi-Fi

Chaska.net, a city-owned ISP in Chaska, Minnesota, has gone live with their broadband wireless service throughout the city. In the few months since the service was introduced, they have seen a subscriber take rate much greater than their initial business plan had anticipated. Download the chaska.net case study for more details about the economic developments made possible by their decision to deploy Tropos metro-scale Wi-Fi.
