Dear Tropos Friend,

Happy New Year from the Tropos family!

Together we made great progress in 2005. Our industry "broke out" with more than 300 metro-scale deployments by the end of the year from Tropos alone. We received great press highlighting the multiple-use benefits of metro-scale Wi-Fi mesh technology, including Katrina disaster recovery, more competitive broadband access, a safer public and a more efficient municipal workforce. Interest in metro Wi-Fi expanded in smaller cities and moved to the largest ones. Existing and new service providers like EarthLink and Google took interest in the technology and in partnering with cities for the benefit of both. Hence the model of 'public-private partnership' was born and cities found a new way to affordably deploy city-wide broadband wireless using an approach that is very analogous to the familiar cable television franchise.

We expect more great progress in 2006. The public-private business model will prove its effectiveness and more private companies will jump in as partners to cities. Our large scale deployments in cities like Philadelphia and Anaheim will be up and running, and will further prove the effectiveness of mesh technology and the power of the multi-use business model. Tropos products will continue to evolve rich features and tools for making planning, deployment, optimization and maintenance tasks easier and more automated, hence further strengthening their cost-effectiveness. Cost-effective system capacity will continue to increase to support new users, applications and revenue streams. And finally the rate of market growth will accelerate, both in the US and throughout the world.

As always, thanks for helping us pioneer a great new market with fantastic benefits to consumers and to our cities.

Bold Prediction: Telcos Will Become Wholesale Providers

There's been a lot of noise in the press lately: on one side, the dying monsters of another age - the telcos - led by BellSouth whose CTO recently announced that they would be justified in charging content providers like Yahoo and Google for access because those companies are making lots of money by using the telco's network.

On the other side are those who believe that the era of Centralized Command and Control withered away with the old Soviet Union and that, like it or not, this is the age of competition and open networks. For the latter, BellSouth's pronouncements are outrageous threats made by a monopoly that continues to thrive only because it showers millions of dollars on lobbyists in US federal and state legislatures.

Earthlink, Motorola and Tropos…Bringing MetroMesh to the Masses

EarthLink, the nation's next generation Internet Service Provider, announced it has partnered with Motorola, Inc. and Tropos Networks to provide wireless equipment, design, installation and system integration for the initial five major cities where EarthLink will deploy municipal wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi) broadband Internet access networks. Motorola will integrate Tropos MetroMesh routers, along with products from its recently announced MOTOwi4 product portfolio, throughout cities such as Philadelphia and Anaheim.

The partnership is the first of its kind in the emerging municipal broadband market…pairing three proven leaders in their respective markets to offer fast, low-cost and simple wireless broadband connectivity to millions of consumers.

The Promise of Wireless Mesh Networks

The wireless mesh network is currently seen as a practical solution for offering large-scale deployment of Wi-Fi access. With wireless mesh networks, a centralized controller performs the management of all the network access points, the benefit of which is to allow for better security and easier management.

Looking at logic, the growth of Internet hotspots everywhere, Wi-Fi-enabled features being a standard offering in personal digital assistants (PDAs), phones and computers lend credence to the notion that this technology will continually evolve to match consumers' expectations and demands.

One specific area of Wi-Fi technology that is being focused on is the wireless mesh network. What is it? Well for starters, a mesh network is a type of wireless networking that uses redundant and distributed wireless network access points. Its aim is to provide greater reliability and range of coverage for any given wireless network. More…
