November 2007

Dear Tropos Friend,

It has been about 90 days since EarthLink formally announced that they were reevaluating their investment in metro Wi-Fi based on changing business priorities and strategies. Because this development has important implications for the consumer broadband access markets and policies in large cities like Philadelphia and Anaheim, much has been written about its implications. In the last few weeks the media has started to notice the accelerating success metro Wi-Fi is achieving in improving public safety, making local governments more efficient, and enhancing the computer literacy and education of our children. In this newsletter we highlight some exciting new applications that have been implemented by Tropos and our innovative partners in these areas, most within the past few months.

Consumer access certainly continues to be an important and successful element of metro Wi-Fi networks in innovative cities like Wilkes-Barre, Birmingham (UK), Chaska, St. Cloud and Mountain View. However, it is now clear that "municipal enterprise" applications like Fire Watch in Laguna Beach and ERLink in Tucson add tremendous value to the communities in which they operate. And, in addition to providing demonstrable benefits to citizens, they offer the "anchor tenancy" elements that make wireless service provider business models work.

We applaud the innovators deploying the applications reviewed below, and others too numerous to mention at this time. We look forward to providing more insights about Tropos customer deployments in future editions of our newsletter.

Thank you for your ongoing interest in, and commitment to the metro wireless broadband industry.

Best Regards,

Ron Sege
