Webinar: “Making the Case for Building a Municipal Wi-Fi Infrastructure”

Guest Speaker: Leonard Scott

Most municipalities recognize that wireless access to information is a necessity for improving efficiencies of ongoing city operations and that such a decision is strategic to a city’s future.  Cities are facing a decision process similar to one faced a century ago when cities were deciding how they should build a municipal road system.  How do you decide justify the investment, how do you select the appropriate materials for the job, how do you fund the project, and how do you calculate the return on investment?

Flash forward to today…on average, 70% of a municipal workforce spends most of their time working outdoors somewhere in the community.  This includes public safety, utilities, public works, public health, transportation…even animal control.  With automation permeating most aspects of municipal operations, field workers must spend time in an office to complete and file paperwork, obtain schedules, access information such as street maps, building plans, etc. A metro-scale wireless broadband network allows employees to increase productivity and effectiveness by spending more time in the field instead of behind a desk.

In addition, there is increasing pressure to participate in green initiatives – resource conservation, water/gas leak detection, greenhouse gas reduction, to name a few.  A communication infrastructure that contributes towards these initiatives can result in tremendous benefits for the community.
In this webinar we explore anchor municipal applications, financial justification, funding models, and the ROI of municipal Wi-Fi networks based upon real city deployments.
