Webinar: Building Municipal Wi-Fi through Cooperation in Tucson, Arizona
Date: September 10, 2008

Guest Speaker: Francisco Leyva, Project Manager, Transportation Department, City of Tucson

In cities large and small, municipal broadband is delivering benefits such as reduced response time by emergency personnel and measurable productivity improvements for mobile workers and public safety personnel. The City of Tucson, Arizona is using their municipal W-Fi network to save lives, save money, and improve public safety. By installing video cameras and other medical equipment into their ambulances, patient telemetry data and a real-time video feed provide in-depth, advance information to the hospital in trauma situations, helping save lives. Using the wireless network to manage traffic signals, city officials help traffic flow more smoothly. And, wireless broadband connectivity allows police to access the national crime database and other information from their vehicles, increasing their effectiveness and enabling them to spend more time in the community instead of back at the office.

In today’s tough economy, how does a large city – Tucson, Arizona is over 190 square miles and 500,000 people -- build out a municipal Wi-Fi network? Join us for a presentation to see how city officials did just this, and what the results have been so far. Topics include:

 - Key challenges facing Tucson and why a better municipal communication infrastructure was needed
 - How they research, analyzed, approved, and funded a solution
 - Why they chose Wi-Fi over RF and cellular technologies
 - Network funding
 - Deployment challenges and lessons learned
 - Initial applications deployed on the network and their benefits
 - Expansion of network – coverage and applications
 - Vision for Tucson
